Mosley stops Diaz to keep WBC Welterweight Title
November 5, 2000
New York, NY (BoxingGurus.com) - "Sugar" Shane Mosley showed why he and many other people think he is the pound for pound best fighter in the world after picking apart Antonio Diaz to retain his World Boxing Council Welterweight belt.
BoxingGurus.com was there in New York and saw Mosley (36-0) put Diaz on the mat a total of three times throughout the fight with two of those knockdowns coming in the sixth, and final round. Referee Arthur Mercante Sr. stopped the fight with 1:34 remaining in the round after he thought Diaz had taken enough punishment.
"Its Sugartime," said Mosley following his first defense of the crown he took from Oscar de la Hoya in June. "(Diaz) was very tough, but I knew ... my punches would take their toll."

The Madison Square Garden Theater sold-out crowd, which included Mike Tyson, Zab Judah and Angel Manfredy, got exactly what they paid for. Mosley came out fast in the first round showing his superior speed and power with multiple combinations. He also switched a few times between conventional and southpaw styles throughout the first round and the rest of the fight.

In the second round, Mosley caught Diaz with a big overhand right that put Diaz on the canvas and showed the one punch power that Mosley has.
The next few rounds were dominated by Mosley and had Diaz hanging on trying to stay out of Mosley's power range.
But in the sixth round, Mosley caught Diaz (33-3) with another big over hand right landing on the top of Diaz's head. It was enough to put Diaz down and put him in trouble even though he beat the ten count.
When Diaz got up, Mosley attacked Diaz against the ropes with blazing hand speed and combinations, finally catching Diaz with another big right hand and ending the fight. |
