Lewis Outboxed and Outclassed Tua to Retain Heavyweight Crown

By: Tony Scott

November 11, 2000

Las Vegas, NV (BoxingGurus.com) - Lennox Lewis put on a show that has now firmly established himself as the best Heavyweight of this generation. Lewis won a unanimous decision over number one contender David Tua to retain the IBF and WBC Heavyweight titles.

The sellout crowd of about 12,500 at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino came to the arena expecting a brawl, but ended up seeing a pure boxing display by Lennox Lewis. David Tua could never overcome the 15-inch reach disparity, as he rarely was able to get to Lewis, because Lewis' jab seemed to be in the way the entire time.

Lewis (38-1-1) was very conservative throughout the entire fight, especially in the first few rounds. Tua (37-2) used head movement to try to get inside, but Lewis would either use his jab to keep Tua away or use quick lateral movement to get of the way. After the first four rounds the fight was fairly even, but from then on, it was all Lennox Lewis.

After about the eighth round the crowd became restless and began booing trying to get the fighters to mix it up more. Neither fighter was in trouble throughout the entire fight, which in very uncommon for Heavyweight fights. But that was Lewis' strategy.

"What was wrong with David Tua was Lennox Lewis," the champion said. "He had never seen a Lennox Lewis."

"You can say what you want, but you have to bring it to the ring," Lewis said. "I was doing all the work in the fight. If you come to war, you have to bring your whole arsenal, not just a left hook and a haircut."

Tua's corner kept telling him between rounds to pick up the pace and attack Lewis, but to no avail.

"I'll make no excuses," said Tua, who will turn 28 on Nov. 21. "I did the best I could. I give much respect to Lennox Lewis. He is a great champion."

Judge Dave Moretti scored it 119-109, Chuck Giampa had it 118-110 and Jerry Roth saw it 117-111 all for Lewis. BoxingGurus.com, who was at the fight, had it 117-111 for Lewis.

Lewis, who made a reported $8.5 million for the fight, was looking ahead after the fight to a possible match up with Mike Tyson. "If Tyson wants to come to test; I'll put him to rest; Lennox Lewis is the best," said Lewis, who hopes to fight former undisputed champion sometime next year.
