Norwalk, CT (BoxingGurus.com) - Felix "Tito" Trinidad put Fernando Vargas on the canvas five times throughout this unbelievable fight, and the fifth knockdown ended the fight in the twelfth round. As BoxingGurus.com predicted, Vargas just got wore out and Trinidad took over in the championship rounds and now is the unified champion with the IBF and WBA Junior Middleweight titles.
Felix Trinidad (39-0, 32 KO) started quickly and put Vargas on the canvas just 20 seconds into the fight. Trinidad caught Vargas with a big left hook that staggered him back and then Tito came in for the kill. Vargas got up quickly, but was still not clear-headed as the referee let the boxers go back at it, and Trinidad again put Vargas down in just three seconds with another big left hook. Vargas again got up quickly and somehow held on the rest of the round.
Trinidad won rounds two and three, but in the 4th round Fernando Vargas (20-1, 18 KO) caught Trinidad with a flush left hook. Trinidad popped up fairly quick, but he was defiantly hurt. Then a little later in the same round, Trinidad got a point taken away for his second low blow of the fight.

Vargas won the 5th round, but that is where the fight took a tilt towards Trinidad. Tito won or tied every round from round six on. Trinidad lost a point in round seven for a questionable low blow and Vargas lost a point for a low blow in round ten. "The first couple of times I hit him low, they were low," Trinidad said. "The third time it was not low. I was worried and I was afraid it would come to a disqualification."
But that all did not matter because of what was about to happen in the twelfth round. Trinidad put Vargas down with another big left hook 40 seconds into the round. When Vargas got up Trinidad put Vargas down right away again with a left hook. It was all over after that. Vargas got up, but Trinidad pounded him and then referee Joe Nady stopped the fight with 1:33 into the round.
"I always knew the fight would end with a knockout," Trinidad said after his knockout victory. "Even though it went into the 12th round, I still thought I would knock him out."
The battered Vargas could not be interviewed as he was taken immediately to the hospital for precautionary measures as he was dehydrated after the fight.
As it turned out, Trinidad did not need a knockout in the final round the judge's scorecards had it: 103-100, 104-100 and 104-99 all for Trinidad. BoxingGurus.com had it 104-99 for Trinidad.
