Judah celebrates a 10th Round Knockout   Richard Mei (AP)
Judah Takes Out Green in 10th

By: Tony Scott and Mike Kaczowka

January 14, 2001

Uncasville, CT (BoxingGurus.com) - IBF Junior Welterweight champion Zab "Super" Judah (26-0-0-1, 20 KO) didn't look very impressive last night against veteran Reggie Green (33-5, 16 KO), but did dispose of him with a TKO at 1:29 of the 10th round and successfully retained his belt for the fourth time last night at the Mohegan Sun Casino.

The action in the fight started out slow, and it wasn't until the 2nd round, when Judah started going to the body, that the pace picked up. In the third round, Green was attempting to throw some combos, but they were not very effective. Gaining confidence, Judah started showboating toward the end of the round prompting the crowd to start booing the inactive Judah.

The pace slowed again in the 4th and 5th rounds, but the 6th round was Judah's best. Legendary referee Arthur Mercante Sr. warned both boxers to pick up the pace and Judah did just that. He landed a great flurry mid round momentarily backing up Green; it was Judah's first flash of brilliance in this fight.

The 7th round had very little action as the pace again slowed. In the 8th round, both fighters started using their jab more effectively and in the latter part, the action picked up a lot with Judah landing a crisp upper cut. The pace stayed active into the 9th round where both fighters exchanged good combinations with Green most likely getting the best of Judah.

In the 10th round, Judah, the slick southpaw, came out utilizing his jab to try to set up some power punches, and did so with a big left hook that staggered Green back and Judah connected with one more left hook to put Green down. Green got back up, but looked disorientated. Referee Mercante let Green continue, and as soon as the action resumed Judah caught Green with straight right and sent him almost through the ropes. The fight was stopped at that point without even a count at 1:29 of the 10th round.

After the fight, Judah gave his props to Reggie Green, "Besides Micky Ward, this is the toughest fighter I have ever fought." Reggie Green also announced that this would be his last fight as he is retiring.

Judah took offense to the crowd booing him, "With veteran fighters you need to take your time and a more professional fight. When the crowd started booing, I picked it up more."

After nine rounds the judge's scorecards had it close: Judge O'Neill had it 87-84 Judah, Judge Flaherty had it 88-83 Judah and Judge Kaczmarke had it 86-85 Judah. We at BoxingGurus.com, who was at the fight, had it 87-84 Judah.

ON THE UNDERCARD:

Juan "Baby Bull" Diaz (7-0, 5 KO) outclassed a game Brad Jensen (7-2, 4 KO) to win an easy 6 round decision. Diaz, the seventeen year-old phenom, utilized superb bodywork to wear down Jensen. Diaz clearly dominated every round to win 60-54 on all three judges scorecards.

Ricardo "Rocky" Juarez (1-0) won an impressive 4 round decision against Pascali Adorano (2-1) in his pro debut. Juarez did a good job adapting to a change in Adorano's style. After the fight Juarez said, "I was told he (Adorano) was righty, but he liked to switch to his left."

Francisco "Panchito" Bojado (1-0, 1 KO) scored an impressive 2nd round TKO over Detrick Castor (0-2-1). This was Bojado's pro debut after representing Mexico in the 2000 Olympics. He showed very quick hands and threw good combinations setting his great left hand.
