Mashantucket, CT (BoxingGurus.com) - Aaron "Superman" Davis might have put an end to a fantastic career Friday night as he sliced up future Hall of Famer Vinny Paz. Paz was stopped at 1:48 in the 8th round due to cuts and severe bleeding at the Foxwoods Resort & Casino in a 10 round Super Middleweight bout.
Davis (48-6, 31 KO) just out-boxed Vinny Paz (46-9, 29 KO) as he used his jab to totally keep Paz off balance. Using his quick jab and a few big left uppercuts, Davis busted Paz's nose in the second round, which was the beginning of the end for Paz.
"I controlled the fight with my jab," Davis said. I knew the knockout was going to come."
The technical knockout did come in the 8th round when Dr. Michael Schwartz recommended to referee Frank Cappuchino that he should stop the fight, and that is what Cappuchino did. Vinny Paz was visibly disappointed, but you could tell he knew it was the right thing to do.
"I knew Vinny was tough, but I was surprised he took all of that punishment," Davis said. "I don't know why his corner or the referee didn't stop the fight."
The judges at ringside had the fight one-sided in favor of Davis, as one judge had it 70-63 and the other two judges had it 69-64. BoxingGurus.com, who was ringside, had the fight 70-63 through seven rounds.
Davis said he would like to fight for a title at either 154 or 160 this year. "If the money is right I would meet Tito at 154, if not 160 is where I would like to go against Bernard Hopkins."
ON THE UNDERCARD:
Richard Grant (13-8, 2 KO) scored a technical win over Vitali Kopytko (18-4, 8 KO) when there was an accidental head butt in the 10th round. Grant was leading with his head all fight and finally a cut came about from it. Kopytko looked sluggish, but seemed to have enough for the victory as BoxingGurus.com at ringside had the fight 88-84 for Kopytko. Grant won a unanimous decision though.
Local favorite Liz Mueller (6-1, 2 KO) won a majority decision over Jaime Clampitt (3-1, 1 KO) in a very entertaining bout. Mueller started out slow, but came on in the final rounds to win this 6 round female lightweight bout. Judges had the fight 57-57, 58-56 (Mueller), and 58-56 (Mueller).
