Fort Worth, TX (BoxingGurus.com) - Nothing better than some more controversy in the sport of boxing.
WBA Bantamweight champion Paulie Ayala (32-1, 12 KO) won a very close decision, which some fans and boxing insiders think was an outrageous injustice for challenger Hugo Dianzo (26-6-1). Friday night, at the Fort Worth Convention Center, Ayala was suppose to put on a show for his hometown crowd, but instead found himself in a battle that almost cost him his world title.
The judges scored the fight a unanimous decision for Ayala. The scores were: 115-113, 115-113 and 115-112 all for Ayala. We, at BoxingGurus.com, acknowledged the closeness of the fight and scored it114-113 for challenger Hugo Dianzo. The fight was clearly closer than some fans and the announcers at ESPN2 Friday Night Fights had it. At ringside, the Associated Press scored the fight 115-112 for Ayala, the Dallas Morning News score the fight 115-113 Ayala and Ft. Worth Star-Telegram score the fight 115-112 Ayala.
Ayala was knocked down in the 4th round, which looked like a half trip, half body punch, but rightfully called a knockdown, by the referee. Dianzo was clearly the more active puncher through out the fight, throwing more punches, but landing a much lower percentage by missing many of those punches.
The punch stats at he end of the fight were: Ayala threw 789 punches and landed 151 punches for a 19% connect rate, while Dianzo threw 1,254 punches and landed 194 punches for a 15% connect rate.
"I wasn't concerned ... but my trainers were," Ayala said. "They don't like it this close."
"Henry told me I needed to win the last two," said Ayala. "I thought it was close and I didn't know how they scored the knockdown. He was tough, he made adjustments, but I felt I did enough in the last two rounds to get the win."
Next up for Paulie Ayala appears to be a $500,000 payday against Clarence "Bones" Adams. The sports books in Las Vegas already have Ayala a 2-1 underdog. "Man, I'm always the underdog," he said, displaying a cut under his right eye in addition to the title belt. "That's OK, it just helps everyone who bets on me."
Ayala will be moving up in weight to 122 pounds to fight Adams, which appears to be taking place on August 4th in Las Vegas.
Paulie Ayala made $150,000 for this fight against Hugo Dianzo, while Dianzo was paid $10,000.
