Lewis is a 20-1 favorite.   (AP)
Is Lennox Prepared to Do Battle This Weekend?

By: Tony Scott

April 19, 2001

Johannesburg, South Africa (BoxingGurus.com) - IBF and WBC Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis unofficially weighed-in at 269 pounds, 20 pounds over his normal fighting weight, just four days before his 13th title defense against Hasim Rahman. That brings up some serious questions about Lewis' preparation and brings back memories of Mike Tyson and James "Buster" Douglas back in 1990.

Lewis (38-1-1, 29 KO) is a 20-1 favorite over Rahman, but that might go down considerably after the distractions that have come out of the Lewis camp over the past few weeks. One of the biggest distractions writers are mentioning is Lewis filming a movie in Las Vegas instead of flying to South Africa and getting himself acclimated to the considerable altitude change (Johannesburg is over 5,000 feet above sea level). Also word has it that Lewis has not trained as hard in the past few weeks and even stopped sparring totally. Lewis also suffered from jet lag coming over and that has hampered his training.

But Lewis says everything is fine, "I came two weeks before (the fight) to acclimatize. I've been at this game a long time and I know what I need."

Rahman (34-2, 28 KO) arrived March 27th and feels like Lewis better not overlook him, "Guys like Michael Grant and Andrew Golota they just froze. They were afraid of the man in front of them. They might be bigger than me but that's just size. But you can't see my heart. Really it's big."

The official weigh-in is set for Friday and Lewis has never weighed more than 251 pounds for a fight. The fight is actually going to take place at 5 AM Sunday morning local time in South Africa to accommodate the United States viewers and will be broadcasted live on HBO at 11 PM EST.
