Junior Jones Wins Unanimous Decision Over a Tough Manuel Sepada

By: Mike Kaczowka and Tony Scott

April 20, 2001

New Haven, CT (BoxingGurus.com) - Junior Jones, 48-5, 27 KO, returned to the ring with a unanimous decision against a tough young Manuel Sepada, 11-5-2, 5 KO on a unique Thursday night card at New Haven Coliseum. After trailing on the cards early Jones finished strong to win a close 10 round decision.

The fight, a Roy Jones Jr. Presents Series matchup, began with limited action as each fighter tried to feel one another out. Sepada was clearly the more active fighter in the opening rounds and as a result jumped out to an early lead. It was apparent that Sepada was looking to act as the aggressor early in an effort to fatigue Jones.

The action picked up in round three with both fighters exchanging punches in the center of the ring. Sepada was successful when in close and managed to connect with a number of power shots to the body. Jones did manage to land some clean shots as well, but injured his right hand in the process. Despite the early injury to Jones, he continued to throw power rights throughout the bout.

Sepada continued his dominance of the fight until the closing seconds of round four when he was put to the canvas by a sharp right hook to the head. Sepada acknowledged to his corner that it was a flash knockdown and got up immediately.

At the start of round five the momentum turned in favor of Junior Jones. Jones, who looked rather lethargic in the opening rounds, became more aggressive and pursued Sepada around the ring. Throughout the next several rounds Jones continued connect with the bigger shots. In the eighth round Sepada's left eye had closed as a result of continued right hooks to the head that were slipping through Sepada's defenses.

The bout concluded with heavy action on both sides. Both fighters increased their activity in hopes to win the final two rounds and solidify a victory. Two of the three judges had the bout 97-92 in favor of Jones while the other had it 95-93 Jones. BoxingGurus.com, who was ringside for the fight, had it 96-94 Jones.

When asked about Sepada in a post fight interview, Jones replied, "The guy had a good opportunity and knew it." Jones went on to say, "It was good to get back in the ring."

Sepada who has long been a fan of Junior Jones had this to say about the traveled warrior, "I respect him. He was the champ. I thought the fight could have gone either way....97-92 was unfair." Sepada made $5,000 for the fight.

On the Undercard:

Vernie Torres, 22-2 (13 KO), successfully defended his WBO Intercontential Championship against a tough Neddy "Little Guns" Garcia, 11-3-1 (6 KO), with a 7th round TKO. Torres dominated the bout with good power shots to the head and body throughout the match. Garcia's corner elected to stop the bout before the start of the 8th round, sparing their fighter any further punishment.

Ernest Mateen improved his record to 25-9-2 (9 KO) with an eight round unanimous win over John Scully, 37-11 (21 KO). Mateen controlled the pace for the majority of the fight, landing consistently with the straight right. All three judges scored the bout 79-73 in favor of Mateen.
