Felix Trinidad speaking at the Hopkins/Holmes fight.   (BoxingGurus.com)
Trinidad/Joppy Next Up in Middleweight Championship Series

By: Tony Scott

April 25, 2001

New York, NY (BoxingGurus.com) - They say Ringling Brothers and Barnum Bailey's Circus is "The Greatest Show on Earth", but until you attend a Don King press conference, I would suggest you withhold judgment. Coincidently, the Madison Square Garden (MSG) main arena was holding the circus and while at the same time in the Theater at MSG, was a Don King Production with Bernard Hopkins fighting Keith Holmes in the first leg of the Middleweight Championship Series.

Before the fight, Don "Only in America" King held a press conference to hype the Felix Trinidad vs. William Joppy fight to be held at the MSG main arena on May 12th.

"There are four champions taking reckless abandon, putting it all on the line (in the Middleweight Tournament)," Don King said. "Four will start, and one will be standing at the end. One will be considered the true champion of the Middleweight division."

I do personally recommend if you ever are bestowed the opportunity to see a Don King press conference, to please do so. I promise you will not be disappointed, just be prepared to have a good time.

King has his own language using words that are not adjectives, but turning them into one. He has a love for the sport of boxing unmatched by anyone, and though many bad things can be said about King, he does make big fights happen.

Now back to Trinidad/Joppy!! Both were on hand to give their take on their fight.

"The fight with me and Joppy will be a hard fight. He is a great champion and he has been champion since 1996," praised Felix Trinidad (39-0, 32 KO). "But I am coming to get his crown and also get the crown of Bernard Hopkins and Keith Holmes."

Joppy speaks about the upcoming bout.   (BoxingGurus.com)

William Joppy (32-1-1, 24 KO) says he won't be happy until he is the undisputed Middleweight champ. "I always consider myself an unhappy champion because I am not satisfied with just one piece of the pie, the WBA Title," says Joppy. "I want to be just the one Middleweight champion."

Trinidad is moving up to the Middleweight division after unifying the titles at the Junior Middleweight and Welterweight divisions. "I respect all the Middleweight champions…but I will become the unified champion of the Middleweight division," proclaims Trinidad. "After I win, I want you to hold me in the same regard as the great champion Sugar Ray Robinson."

Trinidad looked big at the press conference and word is that just over 2 weeks before the big PPV bout, Trinidad weight over 170 pounds. Tito has always had problems in the past being at the correct weight come weigh in time (Vargas and Reid), but Trinidad is a great champion and will be ready to go May 12th. As for Joppy, he seemed almost just happy to be there and irritated by all the commotion. He does seem happy to be finally getting his shot at greatness that he feels he has not gotten in his five-year reign as Middleweight champion.

The winner of the Middleweight World Championship Series will receive a specially commissioned trophy of Sugar Ray Robinson, who many believe was the best middleweight ever--and the best pound-for-pound champion in boxing history.

Trinidad vs. Joppy tickets have been scaled at $750, $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50.
