Lewis Regains Heavyweight Title

By: Tony Scott and Kevin Henichek

November 18, 2001

Las Vegas, NV (BoxingGurus.com) - Hasim Rahman wasted his chance this Saturday night to prove that his one punch KO of Lennox Lewis last April was not a fluke.

Meanwhile, Lewis (39-2-1, 30 KO) redeemed himself and regained the IBF and WBC Heavyweight Titles by knocking out Rahman in the 4th round with a picture perfect left-right combination. The fight took place on HBO PPV at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, NV.

After the fight, Lewis was asked whom he wanted next. His answer was succinct and straight-forward, "I want Tyson."

Rahman was sent to the hospital immediately after leaving the ring and did not attend the post fight press conference. Before he went to the hospital he did give Lewis a small bit of credit, "He fought a good fight, but this shows there are no dominant champs out there."

Lewis took control of the fight from the opening bell, establishing his jab and even cutting Rahman (35-3, 29 KO) over his left eye toward the end of the round with constant jabbing and a crisp right hook.

Over the next 2 rounds, Lewis' jab looked better than ever and was clearly causing Rahman some serious problems. Rahman was pawing at his left eye; reminiscent of their first fight, but this time Rahman did not get a chance to land his big right hand.

Then the 4th, and what turned out to be, the final round came and Lewis appeared to know that he could start landing his power shots at will. Lewis jumped on Rahman early in the round and landed a thunderous combination that clearly stunned Rahman a bit. Then at about the midway point of the round, Lewis landed a thunderous left-right combination that sent Rahman straight to the canvas. Rahman fell like a bag of bricks and his were glossed over immediately. He struggled to get up and at the count of 9 it appeared he was going to make it to his feet, but then he fell back into the ropes and then the canvas. Referee Joe Cortez had reached the count of 10 at 1:29 of the 4th round and Rahman was knocked out.

The conversations in the media room after the fight were comparing Rahman, the journeyman club fighter, to Buster Douglas and Leon Spinks. Even Lewis had some comments about that very topic at the press conference after the fight. "He is now known as Has-Been Rahman. He is the Buster Douglas of the 21st century."

Lewis had won all three rounds on all the judges' scorecards, and the punch stats numbers were obviously in his favor also. Lewis was 72 of 144 (50%) in total punches, while Rahman was 48 of 105 (46%). The huge difference was Lewis' jab though. He was 53 of 11 (48%), while Rahman was 35 of 73 (48%).

Lewis and Mike Tyson's camps are already in discussions and it is apparent that both Showtime and HBO are talking about working out their differences too. At this point Don King is on the outside looking in as King had no options on Lewis and Tyson has made it clear for a long time that he won't fight under a King promoted event.

It will be interesting to see if and how this all works out, but one thing is clear, that the fight would be the biggest money fight in the history of boxing.
