Mayweather retains his WBC Lightweight Title

Klitscho and Mayweather Jr. Victorous

December 7, 2002

Las Vegas, NV (BoxingGurus.com) - Wladamir Klitschko (40-1, 37 KO) and Floyd Mayweather Jr. (29-0, 20 KO) each scored victories in Saturday night’s doubleheader. The night began with the highly anticipated rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Jose Luis Castillo (46-6-1, 42 KO). Mayweather once again proved that he was just too quick for Castillo, quickly tallying up the points in the early rounds. Capitalizing on his left hook, Mayweather Jr. out boxed the slower Castillo for 12 rounds. The fight ended with a unanimous decision for Mayweather (115-113, 116-113, 115-113) who retained his WBC Lightweight crown.

Wladamir Klitschko fires a punch.

On the co-main event, Wladamir Klitschko won by TKO after Jameel McCline couldn’t continue after the 10th round. In a dominating performance the 6’ 6’’ Klitschko simply wore down McCline over the course of the bout. Late in the 10th Klitschko landed some big shots sending a visibly hurt McCline to the canvas. While McCline was able to beat the count, he was in no condition to continue and consequently didn’t come out of his corner for the 11th round. With the victory, Klitschko retained his WBO belt and put himself one step closer to a potential match against Lennox Lewis.
